Quite the mystery. I love the sense of environment, with all the sensory description. It took me a while to get to the first person present style, but by about halfway ... Show More

    • J.A. Waters Yeah, I know first person present is a little bit of a different fit, and some readers steer clear of it, but it seems to work well for me in this story series. And nah, doesn't bode too well... Thank you for reading!

    • Kevin Boyer Is it bad enough I should change some stuff, or is Mazzy okay as-is? I certainly didn't intend for her to do things like that. I wrote her as kind of at the mercy of her impulses, but I hope that didn't make her unlikable. Let me know if there are particular parts that could use a tweak.

    • Jennifer Flath This is one of those times where I hope I'm not doing that thing where I'm overly harsh with the female character, but she just keeps telling the reader how mean everyone is to her, but she's the only one lashing out. I mean, she got mad and cried when Cross doubted her world-view-changing theory about where they are. Poor guy is already following her plan and doesn't know her. Plus there was where she hit him for making a joke. She seems like she perceives herself as a victim, but there isn't any story evidence of her being picked on. It just happens to be one of those character pet peeves for me, so somebody might be having the opposite reaction to her. I love how she's driving the story though. Her jumping into things headfirst really moves the story along.
      6/27/2016 3:19:13 AM
    • Kevin Boyer There is the complicating issue that 99% of the people who used to hassle Mazzy are all dead and she hasn't adjusted. I guess I didn't really make that clear earlier on. I think what I'll is keep writing her as-is for now. She likely doesn't realize she's snapping at others for things she is doing herself. Then I'll have either Cross or Chloe (or both) point it out to her. She'll almost certainly deny it at first, but then she'll have the chance to apologize and mature out of her bad behavior. How does that sound? As much as I don't want Mazzy to have faults, she needs to have something for there to be character growth.
