FAQ

GENERAL FAQs
  • Q:
    What is JukePop?
    A:
JukePop is a community for authors to release their story one chapter at a time, receive feedback from the community, fine tune as the story continues and publish when the story is completed. Readers receive portions of a novel in installments, building excitement and anticipation between chapters-- popularized by Charles Dickens. Appearing in print magazines, the installments or episodes drew public feedback, which Dickens often factored into the subsequent installments to his serial novels. When Dickens finished serializing his novels, he would simply put them together and release, unedited, as a complete novel. Today's audience is familiar with the serial form mostly as reincarnated on television. JukePop, however, believes that readers and writers can benefit from a resurgence of the serial in written form.
  • Q:
Do I need an account to read?
    A:
No. You can read any story without an account. But an account is needed in order to be notified when there’s a new chapter, comment and vote.
  • Q:
Why should authors submit their works to JukePop?
    A:
JukePop is dedicated to helping committed and talented authors succeed. Our crowd investment platform turns avid readers into active investor of a writer’s career in return for a share of their future earnings. We help authors publish their books to all the major eBook retailers, whether they have found success raising money from investors or not (see “Investment FAQ” or contact us for more details). We believe there is a great book in every author. We don't look down on a genre simply because it may be a sub genre. We think all authors--whether they write for large or small audiences--deserve a start, and we offer a supportive for that reason. Once the author starts with us, it's up to the community to decide how to reward the authors via chapter based voting.
  • Q:
    What is a +vote?
    A:
+Voting is a simple way to let authors know that you want to read more of the story or just simply that you enjoyed reading it. +Voting is by chapter and is also the only way for stories to be eligible for monthly “JP 30” rewards. In short, a glowing review or comment does not ensure the continuation of your favorite story; if you don't vote, your favorite story may not continue.
  • Q:
How often are new chapters released?
    A:
It's the author's call, but usually authors who frequent the "Recently Updated" category are the most active. We also incentivize authors to release often and regularly by (1) there must be one new chapter per month in order for the story to earn monthly rewards and (2) authors can only receive one +vote per chapter per reader.
  • Q:
How do I know when a new chapter is released?
    A:
By adding a story to your bookshelf we'll send you an email when a new chapter is available.
  • Q:
What does the red ribbon with "JP 30" mean?
    A:
JP 30 indicates that the story is ranked in the top 30 in the community in the last month or for a completed story that it had received JP 30 status while it was still in-progress. Being a JP 30 winner also earns authors cash rewards payable towards their publishing expense on JukePop. If authors raise money through our crowd investment platform, we will invest however much they've earned as JP 30 winners. If the author simply publishes using our services, it's a credit they can use towards the cost of our service. Not bad for keeping readers happy! Rankings change in real time, so make sure you add stories to your bookshelf when you find ones you like!
  • Q:
    What are Aspiring JukePop Authors?
    A:
At JukePop, we are always cautious about introducing bias into the acceptance decisions. However, we are human and subjectivity will always find a way to creep in no matter what, which is why Aspiring JukePop Authors are so important to us. Because we trust in the power of your voices as a community of readers and authors, Aspiring JukePop Authors who receives 4 endorsements from current JukePop Authors become eligible for monthly JP 30 rewards.
  • Q:
How do I find a particular story?
    A:
In the upper right hand corner of our main page, you'll be able to search based on title, author, genre and sort the result alphabetically or by popularity.
  • Q:
How do authors submit their story?
    A:
Writers must have an account with JukePop in order to submit a story. To submit, click on “Submit” the top of any page.
  • Q:
How will authors find out if their story has been accepted or returned?
    A:
When a story’s submission status changes, you will get an email from us and it will be reflected in the “Start/Edit Stories" page. We typically get back to writers within 1-2 weeks of submission date. If the story has been approved, log onto your account and visit “Start/Edit Stories", click on the "Publish" button under the story, and follow the instructions. Don’t be surprised if your story’s been returned if you didn’t have the right formatting or a proper book cover.
  • Q:
What are the requirements for a book cover?
    A:
Only one requirement: the image has to be a minimum of 600 pixels wide by 800 pixels high and have the same ratio of width to height (3:4). The files can be any size; it just may take longer to upload. If the book cover looks stretched or squished, chances are you didn’t follow our sizing requirements.
  • Q:
How do authors submit subsequent chapters?
    A:
If the writer's story has been accepted, he or she can add subsequent chapters under “Start/Edit Stories".
  • Q:
How long should my chapters be?
    A:
1500 to 2500 words per chapter is a comfortable, one-sitting chapter. Anything significantly shorter might turn readers off. Stories with too many short chapters may also be investigated by JukePop and lose eligibility for all rewards.
  • Q:
Can previous chapters be edited or changed?
    A:
Yes. We allow changes and edits, which will be propagated to both our web readers and app readers automatically within a short amount of time. Readers are also notified of changes and updates.
  • Q:
Are authors obligated to continue the story?
    A:
No, if a story is discontinued or stalled, it is most likely due to lack of reader interest or engagement. Nothing motivates our authors to keep writing like reader appreciation. So be sure to +vote for the story you want to keep reading!
  • Q:
How do authors communicate with readers?
    A:
Foster a relationship with your readers and make your chapters more reader friendly by: (1) Follow your readers that post messages to your story or wall (2) Responding to your readers comments and other activities promptly; (3) Feel free to engage your readers by including a question at the end of a chapter text for general queries. (4) enable donation and you will have a message box to pitch your story.
  • Q:
Are authors required to incorporate reader suggestions into future chapters of their story?
    A:
Authors are not required to do so, but they understand sensitivity to readers will maximize their opportunity to build a readership and earn monthly cash prizes. Good authors will address reader suggestions via their writing, comments, or twitter accounts.
  • Q:
What are the JukePop Terms & Conditions for accepted writers?
    A:
Writers who are accepted will receive detailed Terms & Conditions and will have a chance to agree to them before being published on the site. High level terms that writers tend to worry about are: (Q) Who owns the rights? (A) Writers own 100% of the rights, JukePop does not claim any ownership of your story. (Q) Can I publish elsewhere? (A) Yes, we do not ask for exclusivity to publish with us but it makes sense to drive your readers to your story on JukePop because you won't get the +Votes otherwise. Click here to see the details.
  • Q:
What are some of the best practices for JukePop writers?
    A:
Your first chapter is your "pitch" to potential readers--use it wisely. If you have successfully hooked the readers, the readership you build in the next two to three chapters will be the cornerstone of your fan base. Your chapters should not be too long (1500 to 2500 words per chapter is a comfortable, one-sitting chapter). Do not assume that your readers will remember what happened in previous chapters, because it could be a week or two before you are ready with the next chapter. It also doesn't hurt to include a quick reminder at the beginning of a new chapter.
  • Q:
What does JukePop do to help writers build an audience?
    A:
We believe that authors willing to interact with their readers have the best shot of writing a good story. JukePop encourages readers to vote, provide feedback, and share their favorite story with others. In turn we let the community know which stories are hot and recently updated. So update new chapter frequently and interact with other members of the community, this will increase your chance of being discovered. We will broadcast JP 30 winners on our Twitter & Facebook channels, and retweet any new chapter updates if you tweet us at @jukepopserials.
  • Q:
How can authors achieve JP 30 status?
    A:
Pure and simple: +votes/month is the only way to attain JP 30 status. We make it easy for your readers to +vote on a per chapter basis. Since not all readers like to leave comments or feedback, this is the easiest way readers can tell JukePop which authors they'd like to reward. Authors who add at least one new chapter per month will be eligible for month-end rewards based on JP 30 ranking. Historically, consistent and frequent release of new chapters is the best way of attaining JP 30 status.
  • Q:
When are +votes tallied up to determine which story gets rewarded?
    A:
JukePop will always tally up votes on the last day of the month, precisely at 11:59 PM, GMT. (1st - 10th place gets $30, 11th - 20th gets $20, 21st - 30th gets $10.)
  • Q:
How are tags useful to an author or a reader?
    A:
Tags are useful if the story is beyond the definition of a certain genre. They are also useful for authors to associate their story with words readers would use to find stories with specific elements they want to read. (i.e. a "ghost" story, a story with "dragons", a story with "aliens", etc etc.)
  • Q:
How do I mark my story as completed?
    A:
For now, please contact us or email our editor and we'll take care of it for you.

  • Q:
I already have an Amazon account, what is the difference between the account I have and the Amazon Payment Business account?
    A:
The Amazon account you have was likely created so you can make purchases on Amazon. The Amazon Payment Business account is different in that it will allow you to receive payments or donations from your readers. You can also withdraw the payments you receive into your checking account or into an online Amazon gift card. To access both accounts, just go to www.amazon.com and log in using your original Amazon account info. From your Amazon account profile page, you’ll find a link to your Amazon Payments profile page.
  • Q:
How do I withdraw my funds from my Amazon Payments Business account?
    A:
There are two ways to withdraw your money – one is through an Amazon online gift card, and the other is through your bank account.
  • Q:
How do I add and verify my bank account so I can withdraw the funds I've received?
    A:
You can add a personal or business bank account to withdraw funds. To verify a personal bank account, you can either use instant verification or random deposits. Some banks don’t offer instant verification so you’ll need to request that two small deposits be made by Amazon into your bank account. It generally takes 3 – 5 days for the deposit to show up on your bank statement. Once you see them in your account, simply input the amounts into your Amazon account to complete the bank account verification process. To verify a business bank account, you must verify by faxing your bank statement that has your business account address to the Amazon accounts department (206-765-3424). Amazon has detailed directions on the bank account verification process here: Click Here
  • Q:
Do I need to pay taxes on the donations I receive?
    A:
Amazon Payments will send you a 1099-K tax form if you’ve received more than $20,000 in gross total payments and more than 200 transactions. For more detailed tax information: Click Here

  • Q:
Can I donate to my own story?
